TSX Tails off with Stage All to Itself

Markets in Toronto fell back Thursday in light trading, anchored mostly by resource issues as the main index did not have to compete for attention, as Americans had the day off for Juneteenth.

The TSX Composite Index reversed 53.85 points to close Thursday at 26,506

The Canadian dollar skidded 0.2 cents to 73 cents U.S.

Empire Company declared Q4 earnings. Empire shares ballooned $2.77, or 5.3%, to $54.67. Elsewhere in consumer staples, Jamieson Wellness gained 36 cents, or 1%, to $36.47.

Patriot Metals also displayed Q4 earnings. Patriot stock faded eight cents, or 3.6%, to $2.01.

On the flip side, healthcare stocks declined, with pharmaceutical firm Bausch Health Companies falling 22 cents, or 2.6% to $8.24.

Materials weighed the heaviest on the market Thursday, with Ivanhoe Mines falling 28 cents, or 2.7%, to $10.22, while Capstone Mining backed away 26 cents, or 3.4%, to $7.47.

In consumer discretionary stocks, BRP Inc. shares sank 44 cents to $64.82, while Dollarama dipped $1.36 to $189.35.

Gold stocks descended, primarily Aya Gold, skidding 27 cents, or 2.1%, to $12.88, while Lundin Gold lagged $1.33, or 1.8%, to $72.24.

Energy stocks tried to even things out, with Enerflex taking on 26 cents, or 2.4%, to $11.00, while Paramount Resources conquered 53 cents, or 2.4%, to $22.99.

Industrials also gained, especially Aecon Group, up 45 cents, or 2.3%, to $20.20, while CAE Inc. tacked on 43 cents, or 1.2%, to $36.81.

Investors now await Canadian retail sales data for April on Friday to assess whether consumer spending has been resilient in the face of tariff uncertainty.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange fell 2.67 points to 715.97.

Eight of the 12 TSX subgroups were lower by the close, with materials sliding 0.6%, consumer discretionary stocks down 0.4%, and gold duller 0.3%.

The four gainers were led by energy, up 0.6%, while consumer staples and industrials, ahead 0.3% each.
