Communication is key to healthy relationships, but there are certain things you can say that carry a lot of weight. Three-word phrases like “I love you” or even “I don’t know” can have an impact on your relationship’s dynamic. So, what are some of the words to avoid and which should you be saying more often? Here are several three-word phrases that will either strengthen or secretly destroy your relationship.

1. “I Love You” (Strengthens)

My wife and I tell each other “I love you” several times a day. Both of us enjoy the reassurance these three words can provide. It also ensures that your partner always feels cherished and valued. Of course, your actions have to match your words. If you aren’t demonstrating love through gestures in your day-to-day life, the words will feel empty. So, say it and show it.

2. “I Appreciate You” (Strengthens)

Gratitude is HUGE in relationships. Simply telling someone that you appreciate them can make a difference in your relationship. It nurtures positivity and helps your partner feel seen and valued. Tell them you appreciate everything they do – from small daily tasks to larger sacrifices they’ve made for the sake of your relationship. Ultimately, these three words will strengthen your emotional bond.

3. “I Forgive You” (Strengthens)

Forgiveness is important in any relationship. Conflict is an inevitable part of life, but letting your partner know that you forgive them will foster healing and growth. Don’t hold onto grudges. Life is too short! And it will create an emotional distance between you that may not be able to be fixed. However, it’s important to keep in mind that genuine forgiveness should be followed with open communication and mutual understanding.

4. “I Need Help” (Strengthens)

Asking for help is a sign of trust and vulnerability. “I need help” allows your partner to feel valued and included in your life. It encourages teamwork and reinforces the idea that both partners are in this together. Many people struggle to ask for support, fearing it may be seen as weakness.

5. “You’re Overreacting” (Destroys)

Minimizing your partner’s emotions with “You’re overreacting” can be incredibly damaging. This phrase dismisses their feelings and invalidates their experience. Instead of fostering communication, it creates distance and frustration. Over time, hearing these words can make a partner feel unheard and misunderstood.

6. “That’s Your Problem” (Destroys)

A relationship is about partnership, and “That’s your problem” undermines that foundation. This phrase conveys indifference and detachment, making the other person feel unsupported. Healthy relationships thrive on teamwork and shared responsibility. When one partner dismisses the struggles of the other, it creates emotional isolation.

7. “I Don’t Care” (Destroys)

These are three words I’ll never say to my wife. For one, it makes her incredibly angry (and for good reason. Expressing indifference in this way can silently kill your relationship. You saying “I don’t care” shows a lack of concern for your significant other’s thoughts and feelings. It doesn’t foster an environment for a healthy relationship.

Words Matter More Than You Think

The words you choose to use with your partner can have a profound impact on your connection. It can either bring you closer together or tear you apart. So, it is important to be mindful of the words you choose. Choosing the right words in the right moment can make all the difference in the world.
